Description
Fireworks (2), produced by Hagiwara Hideo in 1965, is a striking example of the artist's mid-1960s exploration of luminous, festive subjects through the disciplined language of abstract woodblock. The composition is built around concentrated bursts of color set against a dark, layered ground: warm reds and oranges flare outward from compact central zones, while finer carved marks and pinpricks of pale tone scatter through the surrounding field in a manner unmistakably evocative of pyrotechnic display. Rather than diagram any single firework against a literal night sky, Hagiwara distills the experience of watching a series of explosions unfold — successive blooms of color, lingering trails, the heavy darkness between bursts — into a sustained tonal event on the sheet.
