Senzoku Pond, from the series Twenty Views of Tokyo

by Kawase Hasui
Within the Tôkyô nijûkei (Twenty Views of Tokyo) series, this design of Senzoku Pond represents one of the twenty sites Hasui selected to document the atmospheric character of a Tokyo already undergoing significant transformation in the early Shôwa period. The series, published by Watanabe Shôzaburô, presented each site in a consistent oban format with the full range of shin-hanga printing technique. Senzoku-ike offered compositional virtues that were unusual within the urban series: a broad reflective water surface, an island shrine with architectural interest, and encircling trees whose seasonal state could specify the time of year precisely. Hasui's approach across the series emphasized time-of-day and seasonal atmosphere as the primary means of differentiating sites of similar character—a still pond in autumn evening light conveyed a different emotional register than the same site in spring morning or winter overcast, even within the same compositional schema.
