Senzoku Pond (Senzoku-ike), from the series Twenty Views of Tokyo (Tôkyô nijûkei)

by Kawase Hasui
Part of Hasui's Tôkyô nijûkei (Twenty Views of Tokyo) series published by Watanabe Shôzaburô, this design presents Senzoku-ike—a small natural pond in Ota Ward—as one of the twenty sites selected to document the capital's scenic and atmospheric character in the early twentieth century. The Twenty Views series was conceived during a period of rapid urban transformation, and Hasui's site selections consistently favor remnants of older Tokyo: ponds, shrines, tree-lined paths, and riverbanks that preserved pre-Meiji character within the modernizing city. Senzoku-ike, with its island shrine accessible by stone bridge, offered precisely this combination of natural and architectural elements within a confined space. The series format—consistent oban sizing, the Watanabe workshop's full shin-hanga technique—imposed a degree of compositional standardization while still permitting Hasui's characteristic atmospheric specificity in sky, water, and seasonal vegetation.
