Biography
Agata Dworzak-Subocz is a Polish artist working at the intersection of computer graphics, printmaking, and photography, based in Torun, Poland. She studied graphics and visual education at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, and earned a doctoral degree in visual arts from the Faculty of Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan.
Her artistic practice centers on screenprinting, where she employs silk screen printing techniques to create mesmerizing works characterized by detailed, clear patterns that play with concepts of space and dimensions. Despite the many superposed layers of intricate patterning, her prints communicate an overall minimalistic impression through their monochromatic color schemes. The visual effect often evokes pixelated digital imagery -- a deliberate tension between the handmade nature of the screenprint process and the aesthetic language of computational graphics.
Dworzak-Subocz's Space series exemplifies her approach, using geometric forms and optical illusions to explore spatial perception and dimensional ambiguity. The works challenge the viewer to distinguish between surface and depth, between the flat plane of the printed paper and the implied three-dimensional spaces that her patterns generate. This investigation of the boundary between physical and virtual space reflects her dual engagement with analog printmaking techniques and digital visual culture.
Her work has received significant international recognition within the miniprint and experimental printmaking circuit. She was awarded the First Prize in Experimental Printmaking at Miniprint Kazanlak in Bulgaria in 2021, and her prints have been selected for multiple editions of the Kazanlak exhibition from 2018 onward. In 2023, she received an Awagami Factory Prize at the Awagami International Miniature Print Exhibition for her work 'Space.' Her prints are collected by the State Library of Victoria in Australia, and she has been represented by Galleri Heike Arndt DK in Berlin, where her work is available through the gallery's physical space and online shop.
