Antonio Canau is a Portuguese artist, printmaker, and academic whose work bridges traditional sculptural practice and contemporary digital printmaking. Born in Gaviao, Portugal in 1963, he has built a career that spans fine art, architecture, and visual communication, with an exhibition record that includes twenty-seven solo exhibitions, sixty-six group exhibitions in Portugal, seventeen Portuguese biennials, and eighty-seven international exhibitions and print biennials.
Canau's educational trajectory reflects his interdisciplinary ambitions. He earned a Sculpture degree with distinction from Lisbon Fine Arts School in 1993, followed by a Master of Arts in Fine Art specializing in Printmaking from the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London in 1997. He subsequently completed a PhD in Architecture with a focus on Visual Communication from Lisbon Technical University in 2011, and a Post-PhD in Digital Drawing in the area of Drawing and Visual Culture from the Faculty of Architecture at Lisbon University in 2015. Since 1998, he has taught Drawing and Photography at the Architecture School of the University of Lisbon.
His artistic practice has evolved from traditional sculpture and printmaking toward digital processes, though his work maintains the conceptual rigor and formal precision that his sculptural training instilled. Early recognition came with the Youth Prize at the III Amadora's Print Biennial in 1992, followed by the Portuguese National Fine Arts Academy Sculpture Award (Gustavo Cordeiro Ramos) in 2011. He has participated in the Global Print Douro biennial and the Bienal Douro, and in 2025 received an Awagami Factory Prize at the Awagami International Miniature Print Exhibition for 'Symbiotic translucent mechanical human head!?,' an inkjet digital print.
