Biography
Liu Chunhai is a Chinese printmaker and painter whose evocative woodblock prints capture the vast, snow-blanketed landscapes of northern China with a poetic sensibility that has drawn comparisons to the great Japanese shin-hanga artist Hasui Kawase.
Born in 1966 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, in China's far northeast, Liu graduated from the Art College of Harbin Normal University in 1991, specializing in engraving. He spent nine years working as a teacher and printmaker before transitioning to full-time artistic practice. He currently lives and works in Beijing.
Liu's woodblock prints are deeply rooted in the landscapes of his homeland. His compositions depict vast wintery terrain blanketed in heavy snow, with human figures or animals rendered small and fragile against the expansiveness of nature. This deliberate contrast between the intimate and the immense creates a powerful sense of solitude and vulnerability that gives his work its distinctive emotional resonance.
His technique employs traditional Chinese woodblock printing methods alongside silkscreen, with editions typically limited to two to twenty copies, making his prints exceptionally scarce. His ability to convey complex emotion through reduced designs, carefully chosen muted color palettes, and the placement of solitary figures within sweeping landscapes demonstrates a mastery of compositional restraint.
Liu is married to Zhao Tianqi, herself a distinguished printmaker, and the two artists have exhibited together on multiple occasions. His work has been shown at Ronin Gallery in New York as part of the 'Ban Hua: Chinese Woodblock Prints Post-1980' exhibition, and at galleries in Chicago, Paris, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
