Biography
Nishiyama Rui is a Japanese woodblock print artist born in 1986 in Kanagawa Prefecture, whose large-scale water-based woodcut prints explore themes of uncertainty, transformation, and the cycles of natural life through densely layered botanical imagery. Her work engages in what she describes as a process of "decomposition and reconstruction," drawing on plant forms as vessels for personal emotion and memory.
Nishiyama studied printmaking at Tama Art University, one of Japan's leading centers for contemporary printmaking, earning her undergraduate degree there and completing a Master of Arts in printmaking in 2014. Her education at the university provided her with deep technical grounding in both traditional and experimental approaches to the woodblock medium.
Her artistic practice centers on water-based woodblock printing on Japanese washi paper, worked at a relatively large scale that is unusual for mokuhanga and gives her botanical compositions an immersive, almost environmental presence. The plant imagery in her prints is not straightforward botanical illustration but rather a subjective transformation of organic forms, where leaves, stems, and flowers become abstractions of inner experience.
Nishiyama has maintained an active exhibition career since her student years. She has participated in notable competitive exhibitions including the 11th Hamamatsu City Art Museum Print Award Exhibition, the 7th Hida Takayama Contemporary Woodblock Print Biennial, the 17th Kanuma Municipal Art Museum Woodblock Print Award Exhibition, and the 79th Japan Print Association Exhibition, where she received the Kyoto Exhibition Commemorative Prize. In 2022, she took part in PATinKyoto (Print Art Triennale in Kyoto) at the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art.
Her solo exhibitions have been held at venues including Galleria Grafica bis in Tokyo, Kosugi Gallery in Kanagawa, and Orie Art Gallery in Tokyo. Her works are held in the permanent collections of Tama Art University, Selcuk University in Turkey, the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts, and the Kanuma Municipal Kawakami Sumio Art Museum.
