Biography
Soetkin Everaert is a Belgian artist based in Ghent whose practice spans drawing, textiles, ceramics, and printmaking with a particular focus on Japanese woodblock printing. She studied sculpture at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels before enrolling in a free graphics course at the Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent in 2018, where she studied Japanese woodcut technique under Vladimir Ivaneanu.
Together with Ivaneanu, Everaert co-founded Mokuhanga Magic, a Belgium-based research collaboration that has become one of Europe's most active platforms for promoting the art and craft of mokuhanga. The project celebrates the traditional Japanese art of woodblock printing, in which each print is hand-carved and hand-printed using natural materials and water-based pigments. Through Mokuhanga Magic, Everaert and Ivaneanu publish the Mokublad newsletter, maintain the Mokumap international directory of mokuhanga practitioners, organize the 'Mokuhanga Mon Amour' traveling exhibition and open call series, and offer workshops and educational resources.
In 2024, Everaert and Ivaneanu traveled to Japan to participate in the Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference in Echizen, where they refined their craftsmanship with local master printers and strengthened international connections within the mokuhanga community. Everaert's work was included in the IMC 2024 Europe-Africa juried international exhibition.
Everaert's artistic practice is characterized by a material sensitivity that connects her background in three-dimensional work with the tactile, handmade qualities of mokuhanga. She approaches the medium as both a traditional craft and a platform for contemporary artistic expression, with an emphasis on sustainability and the eco-friendly nature of water-based printing.
