Biography
Takao Sano (佐野隆男, born 1941) is a Japanese printmaker known for figurative woodblock prints in strong, vivid colors and for his internationally recognized work in ex-libris (bookplate) art. Born in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, a city with deep roots in traditional Japanese craftsmanship, Sano received an award from the Nihon Hanga-in Exhibition in 1959, launching a career in printmaking that has spanned more than six decades.
Sano's prints are characteristically modern in composition yet figurative in subject matter, rendered in bold color harmonies. He has achieved particular distinction in the specialized field of ex-libris, the small-format bookplate prints that form a dedicated international collecting community with its own exhibitions, competitions, and exchanges. His ex-libris works have been exhibited worldwide, including in Poland, France, Italy, Russia, and Argentina.
