Biography
Yung Sau-Mui is a Hong Kong-based printmaker, arts administrator, and researcher who serves as Programme Director and Principal Printer at Print Art Contemporary (formerly Hong Kong Open Printshop). She is a member of the International Mokuhanga Association (IMA) Board of Directors for the 2025-2027 term, and works as a museum advisor and researcher for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong government.
Yung studied printmaking at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University before receiving scholarships to continue her education at the University of Alabama, the Tamarind Institute (a leading center for lithographic printmaking), and the University of New Mexico. Upon returning to Hong Kong, she co-founded Hong Kong Open Printshop and has been a driving force in promoting printmaking art development in the city.
Her research interests center on the development of Hong Kong print art, with particular expertise in the history of lithography and Chinese movable type in modern China. She authored the book 'Two Centuries of Hong Kong Type: From Best in the World to World Cultural Heritage,' which documents the rich history of movable type printing in Hong Kong from the nineteenth century to its current recognition as cultural heritage.
Yung has been recognized by the Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme (Arts and Culture) and received the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Fellowship for Artistic Development. She has written on the history of woodblock printing in Hong Kong, presenting research on Hong Kong woodblock printing from the 1930s to the present at the 2017 International Mokuhanga Conference.
