Description
Catalogued under a generic working title rather than a descriptive subject, this print belongs to a portfolio documented through Abe's appointment at Joshibi University of Art and Design, where he has taught printmaking within the Department of Oil Painting since 2017. As a mixed-media print, the work brings together more than one matrix-based process — typically a combination of intaglio, relief, planographic, or photographic transfer techniques — printed sequentially on a single sheet of [washi](/glossary/washi) or heavyweight Western printmaking paper. The methodology reflects the hybrid training Abe completed at Kyoto Seika University (2002) and Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Design (2004), two institutions central to the post-sōsaku-hanga generation's move toward layered, experimental practice. In the absence of a titled subject, the print reads less as a finished image than as a record of process: passages of plate-tone, registered overprinting, and accumulated ink density together stand in for the kind of figurative or landscape reading a more conventional title would invite.
