Description
Submitted to the International Mokuhanga Conference held in Echizen and Awara in 2024, this print represents Mankiewicz's participation in the triennial gathering that brings mokuhanga practitioners together from across the world. Echizen, in Fukui Prefecture, is one of Japan's principal [washi](/glossary/washi)-producing regions, and [kozo](/glossary/kozo)-based Echizen papers have long been favoured by mokuhanga printmakers for their strength under repeated [baren](/glossary/baren) impressions and their receptivity to layered water-based pigments. The conference framing situates the work within an international community of contemporary mokuhanga artists rather than the historical [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) lineage, and Mankiewicz's submission reflects the graphic sensibility that runs through his broader practice as an illustrator working between Kyoto and Byron Bay. His prints typically carry the bold compositional decisions and narrative clarity associated with editorial illustration, translated into the registered, hand-printed surfaces of woodblock. The Echizen submission sits within this body of work, produced in dialogue with the paper traditions that the host region represents.
