$300–$2,500. Common prints: $300–$800. Key value factors: Amano's sosaku-hanga prints are modestly priced. Bold, well-preserved abstract works are most valued.
From Gauge (Return), created in 1969, employs the language of measurement and repetition. A gauge is an instrument of standardization, used to ensure consistency and conformity to a fixed dimension. "Return" implies coming back to a starting point, completing a circuit. Together, the terms suggest a work that departs from a measured standard and then circles back, having been transformed by the journey.
Executed in ink and color on embossed paper, this print combines precise chromatic choices with the physical relief of karazuri technique. The embossing creates areas where paper alone, without ink, becomes the expressive medium, its raised surface catching ambient light in ways that shift as the viewer's position changes. Amano's late-1960s work consistently explores this interplay between printed image and physical object, refusing to let the woodblock print remain a purely two-dimensional experience.
