Description
A mokuhanga portrait of Roger Waters, the English musician and co-founder of Pink Floyd. The Spiegel suffix in the title indicates a Der Spiegel source image — Artz's practice frequently begins from editorial or documentary photography, which is then digitised, colour-separated, and carved across multiple woodblocks for water-based printing on washi. In translation, the photographic likeness is reduced to the superimposition of a key block carrying the principal contours and a sequence of colour blocks each holding a single hue or bokashi gradient, so that what reads in the original photograph as continuous shadow becomes a stepped accumulation of layered impressions taken under the baren. Within Artz's wider body of work — which moves between flat photographic prints, folded paper portrait sculpture, and site-specific installation — the print sits in the strand most directly concerned with the slowing of mass-media imagery: a face widely circulated in digital news photography is pulled, by hand, into the deliberately analogue register of mokuhanga.
