Description
Constellation disperses small punctate marks across a wider tonal field, the composition suggesting the spatial logic of star-mapping or astronomical chart-making rather than a depicted sky. Mokuhanga registration of small repeated forms, applied through sustained [baren](/glossary/baren) pressure on cherry block, produces slight variation in ink density across the field — a quality the print medium delivers more readily than mechanical reproduction. Silkscreen layering introduces a second order of marks, possibly halftone or geometric, while intaglio elements add incised connective lines or plate tone. Plant-based pigments, characteristic of Jung's recent studio direction, narrow the palette to colorants derived from indigo, madder, walnut, or other dye sources, lending the work a tonal restraint distinct from synthetic-ink contemporaries. Within Jung's broader practice — recognized in the Japanese international print biennials — Constellation reflects the artist's interest in pattern, accumulation, and the way repeated mark-making across multiple print processes generates emergent fields rather than singular images.
