Description
The title's reference to whispered, partial speech maps onto a print whose composition emerges from the layered overlay of distinct processes rather than a single resolved image. Jung's mokuhanga passages, printed with the [baren](/glossary/baren) onto [washi](/glossary/washi) in plant-based pigment, contribute receding fields of soft-edged color; her silkscreen and intaglio elements interrupt and partly obscure these layers, producing a palimpsest in which each technique remains visible through the others. This stratification is characteristic of the cross-medium direction her practice has taken over the past decade, in which mokuhanga functions as one register among several rather than the sole medium. The plant-based dyes she uses give the underlying color a tonal complexity that synthetic inks do not reproduce. Rumors belongs to the body of recent work for which Jung has been recognized at Japanese international print biennials, where her active engagement with mokuhanga from an American printmaking faculty position is shared by a small group of U.S. practitioners.
