Description
The title implies lateral displacement — a composition built around a sliding rather than fixed relationship between forms. In Jung's mixed-media practice, this dynamic is generated as much by the registration between processes as by individual marks: a silkscreened or etched element off-axis from the underlying mokuhanga produces a visual tension between layers. The mokuhanga ground, printed by hand with the [baren](/glossary/baren) onto absorbent [washi](/glossary/washi), contributes soft fields of plant-based pigment over which the harder silkscreen and intaglio marks slide. The plant-based dyes give these fields a tonal subtlety that synthetic inks do not match. Slide belongs to the cross-medium body of work that has over the past decade drawn Jung's studio practice toward mokuhanga while preserving her engagement with the Western print tradition. Her recent prints have been recognized at Japanese international print biennials, where her active practice across both Japanese and Western print traditions is shared by few American printmaking faculty.
