Description
The title points toward linear elements — a composition organized around discrete marks rather than continuous tonal fields. Such linear marks can issue from any of the techniques Jung combines: the etched line of intaglio, the squeegeed edge of silkscreen, or a carved relief block in mokuhanga, each producing a distinct character of line. Set against mokuhanga's softer color fields, printed with the [baren](/glossary/baren) onto [washi](/glossary/washi) in plant-based pigment, these linear elements register with particular emphasis. Jung's plant-based dyes give the underlying color a tonal depth that synthetic inks do not reproduce. Sticks belongs to the cross-medium body of work in which her studio practice — increasingly oriented over the past decade toward mokuhanga and natural pigment — preserves its engagement with the Western print tradition. Her recent prints have been recognized at Japanese international print biennials, placing her among a small number of U.S. printmaking faculty actively teaching and working in mokuhanga alongside the Western tradition.
