Spider Biter (2018) combines entomological subject matter with abstract composition, a pairing that appears across Vollmer's later work. The title names an aggressive or predatory insect behavior, and the print likely renders the creature with both botanical specificity and formal distortion — legs or body segments becoming geometric elements within a larger abstract field. Mokuhanga's capacity for fine line work alongside broad tonal areas suits this dual approach: carved key lines can articulate the spider's anatomy while color blocks dissolve into abstracted surroundings. The work participates in a tradition of [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) (bird-and-flower prints) reimagined through a contemporary Western lens, where natural history and formal experiment coexist.
