Description
Without a descriptive title to anchor interpretation, this woodblock print stands as part of Abadal Lloret's broader output as a contemporary mokuhanga practitioner working in Arenys de Munt. Her process draws on the water-based Japanese tradition: pigments mixed with rice paste (nori) and brushed onto cherry or shina blocks, then pulled by [baren](/glossary/baren) onto dampened [washi](/glossary/washi). The kentō registration system — small notches cut into each block — allows the multi-block layering that distinguishes mokuhanga from European relief printing. Abadal Lloret arrived at the medium after training in biology and through her parents' studio, Murtra Edicions, which directed the International Printmaking School in Calella and Mataró for fifteen years. The shift from intaglio-heavy European training to mokuhanga reflects her advocacy for non-toxic processes — Japanese woodblock requires no acid baths, no solvents, and uses only water-soluble pigments — a technical position she carries into her teaching at the Art Print Residence.
