Description
An untitled woodblock print by Ariadna Abadal Lloret, this work reflects the Catalan printmaker's transition from a scientific background — she trained in biology at the University of Girona — into the family discipline of printmaking. That dual formation is visible in her studio practice, which combines methodical attention to material chemistry (a key concern in her advocacy for non-toxic processes) with the intuitive choices of a working artist. The untitled designation places this piece among the studies and standalone compositions that occupy a substantial part of her output. Technically, such prints typically rely on multiple carved blocks registered in sequence on dampened [washi](/glossary/washi), with water-based pigments applied by brush and transferred under the pressure of a [baren](/glossary/baren) rather than a press. The surface qualities that result — soft edges, breathable color fields, occasional [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) transitions where pigment has been graded across the block — distinguish hand-pulled mokuhanga from mechanical relief printing. The work belongs to a contemporary international movement reinterpreting Japanese-derived techniques for studio practice outside Japan.
