Description
An etching of a cafe interior or exterior, drawing on the strand of Hansen's catalogue that turned away from the woods and ponds of Vashon Island toward small social and urban subjects. Cafes are familiar in postwar American printmaking as a setting for figures in shared but private spaces — patrons at tables, light from a window, the vertical structure of chairs and counters. Etching suits such interiors because the medium can hold both the fine line of architectural framing and the looser handling of figures and steam or smoke. The 1977 date situates the print among his late-1970s figural and domestic work, alongside flower studies of the same year, and it suggests the same off-handed observational eye Hansen brought to his island subjects, now applied to a built environment. The piece sits within his broader habit of moving between landscape, figure, and still life rather than committing to any one of these categories.
