Description
The second variant in Hao Boyi's Suzhou Scenery group, this woodblock print explores a different vantage point or compositional arrangement within the city's historic water towns. Suzhou's network of canals and its classical scholar's gardens offer varied spatial structures — from intimate enclosed garden vistas to the broader horizontal sweep of a canal lined with houses — and Hao's serialized treatment suggests sustained engagement with the city's pictorial possibilities. The contrast between the whitewashed walls characteristic of Jiangnan architecture and their reflections or shadows in dark canal water is well suited to the tonal range available in woodblock printing. Compared to the artist's Heilongjiang subjects, the Suzhou prints likely emphasize architectural precision and human scale over the open wilderness of the north.
