The fifth entry in the series departs from the colored washi editions by working in sumi ink on Hosho, a particularly strong and smooth Japanese paper that accepts ink with clarity and precision. The restriction to sumi — a carbon-based ink ground from pine soot or lampblack — shifts the Dappled Light inquiry toward tonal contrast rather than chromatic layering. Light is now described entirely through the absence of ink, with the pale Hosho ground standing in for brightness. Wilhide Justin's use of mokuhanga technique with sumi on Hosho aligns the work with a longer tradition of Japanese ink printing while maintaining the contemporary naturalist focus that defines her practice.
Dappled Light V was created by Carol Wilhide Justin.
