Description
This print was produced for submission to the International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC) 2024, held in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture — the historic papermaking region whose handmade [kozo](/glossary/kozo) [washi](/glossary/washi) has shaped the medium for centuries. As an IMC submission, the work was likely printed on Echizen-made washi, the conference's defining material reference. Wilhide Justin's contribution follows her consistent method of translating field photographs of natural subjects into mokuhanga, layering water-based pigments through repeated [baren](/glossary/baren) impressions to develop the tonal depth and translucent surfaces particular to the technique, often incorporating [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations to register atmospheric effects. IMC exchange portfolios typically specify a uniform paper size and small edition, with submitted prints exhibited at the conference and circulated among participating artists. Her inclusion in this international context reflects her dual training: an MA from the Royal College of Art in London paired with mokuhanga study at MI-Lab in Fujikawaguchiko, the program that has trained a sizable share of the Western artists now working in the medium. The print sits alongside her wider body of botanical and landscape work, all derived from her own photographic source material.
