Description
Magnolia Nigra II continues the sequence begun in the first plate, and as a middle image typically marks the flower at its fullest expression — the tepals splayed open to reveal the central column of stamens and carpels at the heart of the bloom. Doyle's copper-sulphate etching gives her the descriptive control to register the difference in surface between the velvet exterior of the tepal and its paler, more reflective inner face, the latter rendered through reserved white paper or lightly bitten aquatint. The series structure itself recalls the staged temporal observation found in much botanical illustration, from Ehret's flowering plates to the contemporary work of Rory McEwen, and resonates with the Japanese kacho-e convention of presenting bird-and-flower subjects in an isolated, unbackgrounded format. The Magnolia Nigra cycle represents an extended engagement with a single specimen and reflects Doyle's practice of returning to a subject across multiple plates rather than seeking exhaustive coverage in a single image.
