Description
Boro 2026.1 draws its title from the Japanese textile tradition of boro — cloth mended and reinforced over generations through repeated patching and sashiko stitching, often with indigo-dyed rags of different ages and textures. Anczelowitz translates this practice into the medium of washi and ink, layering torn and assembled paper fragments to create a surface that accumulates visual history in the manner of a worn garment. Ink is applied to unify or articulate these joined fragments, its pooling and bleeding following the contours of torn edges and overlapping sheets. The piece is the first in a 2026 series, suggesting an ongoing investigation into boro as both formal method and conceptual framework — equating papermaking and textile repair as parallel acts of material preservation and abstract composition.
