Description
This print was Rodride's submission to the International Mokuhanga Conference (IMC) 2024, the triennial gathering of woodblock practitioners that in 2024 was held in Echizen, the Japanese [washi](/glossary/washi)-producing region of Fukui Prefecture. IMC submissions follow a standardized format: a single small-scale work printed on Echizen washi supplied by the conference, allowing direct comparison of registration, pigment handling, and [baren](/glossary/baren) technique across an international field of contributors. As such, the print functions as both an artistic statement and a technical demonstration. Echizen washi, with its long [kozo](/glossary/kozo) fibers and absorbent surface, accepts multiple impressions and water-based pigment layering well, and IMC works typically emphasize the medium's distinctive qualities — visible fiber, soft tonal transitions through [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation, and the tactile impression left by the baren. For Rodride, participation places her work within the contemporary mokuhanga community that the IMC convenes every three years, alongside practitioners from Japan, North America, Europe, and Australia.
