Description
The second of three prints bearing the dual Maeda Masao / Ebina Masao attribution, this work is undescribed by title or subject beyond the artist identification. The pairing of the two names across multiple catalogue records points to a consistent cross-attribution in the historical record rather than an isolated error. Like its companions in the group, this print most plausibly belongs to Ebina's Genji Monogatari series, given that series' scale and prominence in his documented output. Compositional characteristics would reflect the classical yamato-e pictorial tradition as interpreted through the woodblock medium: flat color areas defined by fine key-block lines, figures in Heian court dress, and architectural or seasonal elements keyed to the narrative moment illustrated.
