Description
The second Blackbird in Trees print continues Miliano's investigation of the bird-in-environment composition, likely altering branch arrangement, bird position, or tonal register from the first iteration. Such paired or numbered variants are a recurring feature of mokuhanga practice, where the same blocks may be reprinted with adjusted color sequences, or related blocks recut to test alternative spatial solutions. The technical demands are substantial: registration across multiple blocks for branches, leaves, and ground tone; controlled application of nori (rice paste) and water-based pigment to achieve consistent ink loading on the [baren](/glossary/baren); and management of paper moisture for even absorption. The Irish woodland setting, with its filtered light and saturated greens after rain, aligns with mokuhanga's strengths in atmospheric tonality. Within the broader blackbird series, this print extends the inquiry from isolated subject (Blackbird V, VI) through grounded scene (Blackbird on Grass) to fully integrated environmental composition, marking a progression in how Miliano situates the recurring motif.
