Summer Blackbird VII marks the seventh variation in the summer phase of Miliano's blackbird series, indicating a sustained investigation rather than a single seasonal portrait. By this point in the sequence, the artist is likely working with a refined understanding of how viewpoint, perch, foliage density and light angle each shift the meaning of the central motif. Water-based mokuhanga pigments allow the layering of green, ochre and shadow tones in transparent passes, with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations giving the foliage atmospheric weight. The blackbird itself remains the constant — its black silhouette demanding clean keyblock cutting and careful [baren](/glossary/baren) pressure to avoid uneven absorption on the [washi](/glossary/washi). The series approach situates Miliano within both the Japanese tradition of print sequences and the wider conceptual practice of contemporary printmakers who use repetition to deepen rather than exhaust a subject. Within his Irish mokuhanga practice, the blackbird series functions as an ongoing notebook rendered in editioned form.
