Description

This print was selected for exhibition at the 2024 International Mokuhanga Conference held in Echizen, a region of Japan historically central to washi paper production. Forrest's submission to the juried exhibition reflects her ongoing engagement with the international mokuhanga community, following her earlier inclusion in the 2021 IMC in Nara. The work would have been printed using traditional water-based pigments and a baren on washi, the technique that defines mokuhanga as distinct from Western relief printing's oil-based approach. Echizen's role as host site is part of the work's context: the region has produced handmade paper for over 1,500 years, and IMC exhibitions there foreground the material substrate of the medium. Forrest's continued participation across multiple IMC cycles places her among the consistent international practitioners building dialogue between contemporary Western printmakers and the Japanese craft tradition that originated the technique.
