Description
Calla W-2 takes the calla lily as its subject, the trumpet-shaped spathe and central spadix forming the principal compositional motif. The 34 × 62 cm vertical format accommodates the elongated stalk and curling lip of the flower, with the W-2 designation indicating the print's position within an extended series — a working method common among intaglio printmakers, who often revisit a single botanical subject through successive plate states or compositional variations. Etching permits fine linear definition along the edge of the spathe and gradated tonal modeling of its interior, typically achieved through a combination of hard-ground line work and aquatint passages. Furumoto's selection of this print for the 68th CWAJ Print Show in 2025 places the work within the principal Tokyo-area juried exhibition circuit for contemporary Japanese print, and the piece reflects the technical orientation of the intaglio stream at Kyoto City University of Art, where she trained. The calla as subject sits within the botanical and still-life traditions sustained in Japanese intaglio practice from the late twentieth century onward.
