Description
"by chance 4 (variation 1)" belongs to an ongoing series in which Hamano uses a chance procedure as the generative armature for each composition, then prints the same plate or a closely-related plate in successive variations. "Variation 1" indicates the first inked pull of this state. Within an intaglio practice, variation is produced by changing inking, plate tone, paper, or the relationship between two plates rather than by altering the etched matrix itself, so a single plate can yield distinct prints that share a structural skeleton. The "by chance" language places the series within the procedural lineage of Arp and Cage, while Hamano's commitment to two-plate, two-colour registration ties it to the precisionist mid-century European intaglio tradition. The series sits at the centre of the body of work that brought her into the Kansai triennial circuit through PATinKyoto 2022 and that has anchored her Tokyo gallery practice since her 2015 graduate degree from Tokyo Geidai's Printmaking Studio.
