Description
"by chance 4 (variation 3)" is a later pull within the same chance-derived plate state as variation 1, and reads as a sibling rather than a sequel: the underlying compositional armature is shared, while the inking, registration, or colour pairing is shifted. In intaglio, variation across pulls foregrounds the role of the printer at the press — the same etched plate can be wiped to leave plate tone or wiped clean, inked à la poupée or in flat passes, and registered against a second plate at slightly different alignments. Reading variations 1 and 3 together makes those decisions visible and turns the series into a study of how much can be changed without breaking the identity of the work. The "by chance" series remains the most legible expression of Hamano's interest in procedural generation and links her to the post-war European printmakers who treated the plate as an instrument of controlled indeterminacy rather than as a vehicle for image-making.
