Description
Kumadori denotes the bold, stylized face-painting patterns applied to kabuki performers playing aragoto (rough-style) roles — warriors, demons, and supernatural beings. Each pattern, executed in red, blue, or black over a white base, signals a character's nature and emotional state to the audience. Takahashi Hiromitsu isolates these graphic forms as subject matter in their own right in this [kappazuri](/glossary/kappazuri) stencil print, treating the radiating lines and angular masses of kumadori as abstract compositional elements rather than as documentation of a performed role. The "B" designation places this print within a lettered series, presumably paired with a Kumadori A variant in a different color scheme or configuration. Kappazuri stencil technique is well suited to the flat planes and crisp boundary lines that characterize kumadori, allowing the layered pigments to approximate the dense, saturated quality of stage makeup without the tonal gradations of woodblock [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi).
