Description
Shibaraku (Wait a moment!) is one of the most recognized plays in the kabuki jūhachiban, defined by the entrance of a hero in an enormous persimmon-colored costume who interrupts an unjust execution with the shouted command that gives the play its name. The aragoto performance style — exaggerated posture, bold kumadori makeup in red and black, outsized props — makes Shibaraku among the most visually distinctive subjects in kabuki imagery. Takahashi Hiromitsu's treatment in [kappazuri](/glossary/kappazuri) stencil technique, designated "C" within a lettered series, abstracts this theatrical iconography into stencil-based graphic form. The flat, bounded color areas natural to kappazuri printing have an affinity with the bold planar elements of aragoto imagery — the broad sleeves, strong color contrasts, and geometric makeup patterns of Shibaraku's costume and face. The series designation suggests sustained engagement across multiple compositions with the visual codes of this canonical subject.
