Description
Homunculus draws on the European alchemical figure of an artificially generated miniature human, a subject that translates readily into the layered registration of mokuhanga. The title implies a single small figure rendered against a defined ground, where the relationship between the body and its surrounding space carries the meaning of the image. The water-based pigments used in mokuhanga sit within the fibres of [washi](/glossary/washi) rather than on its surface, producing a soft material presence appropriate to a figure conceived as both organic and constructed. Subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) can model volume around the body while flat keyblock impressions hold the contour. Ho Ching Wong's practice in Hong Kong reflects the spread of mokuhanga beyond Japan, where artists have adopted the technique for its tactile qualities and its compatibility with conceptual subject matter. The print's reference to alchemical iconography aligns with a broader tendency in contemporary mokuhanga toward symbolic and psychological imagery, and with Wong's selection for the 2021 International Mokuhanga Conference exhibition in Nara, an event that surveyed the medium's international reach.
