Description
This untitled work is part of Veitch's mokuhanga output. Multi-block woodblock prints depend on [kento](/glossary/kento) registration — small L-shaped and straight notches cut into each block at fixed positions — that align the paper precisely as it is moved from block to block. Misalignment of even a millimeter is visible in the finished impression, so the carving of these registration marks is as deliberate as the carving of the image itself. The technique allows successive layers of color to build up an image without bleeding or overlap, and small variations from print to print within an edition come from how each sheet is registered and burnished. The subject of this particular print cannot be described without a visible image. Veitch's inclusion in the Mokumap directory reflects the global expansion of mokuhanga practice, and his Kingston base makes him an unusual presence in a discipline historically rooted in Japan.
