Description
This untitled print belongs to Veitch's body of mokuhanga work. Block selection in the technique is consequential: traditional Japanese practice favors cherry (yamazakura) for its fine, even grain, though contemporary practitioners working outside Japan often substitute shina plywood for cost and availability. The wood's grain orientation can be incorporated into the printed image — visible woodgrain texture is sometimes deliberately preserved as a graphic element rather than smoothed away during carving. Tools include the hangi-to knife and various U- and V-gouges, each used to remove material from areas that should not print. Without a title or image, the specific subject of this print is unknown. Veitch is listed in the Mokumap directory maintained by Mokuhanga Magic, an international network documenting mokuhanga practitioners across regions, and he is among the few based in the Caribbean. His practice contributes to the contemporary geographic expansion of the discipline.
