Description
This untitled print is part of Veitch's mokuhanga production. Pigments in the water-based technique are mixed on the block with a small quantity of rice paste (nori), which thickens the color and helps it adhere to the paper without bleeding. The pigments themselves are typically [sumi](/glossary/sumi) ink or finely ground watercolor, applied with a stiff hake brush in a circular motion to distribute color evenly across the carved surface. Color saturation depends on how much pigment is loaded and how dampened the paper is at the moment of printing — a balance that requires consistent studio conditions to maintain across an edition. Without a visible image or title, the depicted subject cannot be identified. Veitch's Kingston-based practice is documented through the Mokumap directory, an international resource maintained by Mokuhanga Magic, and his work represents one of the few Caribbean entries in that catalog of contemporary mokuhanga artists.
