Description
This untitled woodblock print is the work of Idris Veitch, a mokuhanga practitioner working from Kingston, Jamaica. As an untitled piece in his oeuvre, it reflects the contemplative, exploratory mode common among contemporary mokuhanga artists, who often forgo descriptive titles to keep viewer interpretation open. The print would have been produced using water-based pigments applied to carved cherry or shina blocks, with impressions taken by hand using a [baren](/glossary/baren) onto dampened [washi](/glossary/washi) paper. This labor-intensive process, in which each color requires a separately carved block and careful registration via kentō marks, lends mokuhanga its characteristic softness of edge and depth of pigment absorption. Veitch's inclusion in the Mokumap directory of Mokuhanga Magic situates this print within a global network of artists adapting a centuries-old Japanese craft to varied cultural contexts. As one of the few Caribbean mokuhanga practitioners, his work expands the geographic footprint of a tradition whose contemporary movement now spans continents far beyond its Edo-period origins.
