Description

Hanji, the long-fibered Korean mulberry paper Lee has used since her training at Hong-Ik University, takes woodcut impressions softly and tolerates layered registration without buckling. The title indicates a passage of crossed or knotted line — characteristic of her urban subjects, in which feet, traffic, hair, or wires accumulate into a dense graphic field rather than resolving into a single figure. As a single woodcut the work sits beside her animation suites of the same period, where individual prints function as frames; Tangled isolates one moment in that flow and treats the printed line as a record of intersection rather than narrative. Carved areas read as bright hanji ground; uncarved relief surfaces hold the ink. The reduced palette and emphasis on linear mark are typical of her relief work in this period, before the reductive color experiments of 2021 to 2023.
