Description
This untitled Mokumap print extends the series' core conceit: each sheet functions as a registered set of impressions whose accumulation evokes survey, chart, or topographic key without describing a specific place. Mokuhanga lends itself to this approach because the medium privileges flat, registered blocks of color, each impression a discrete decision, rather than the continuous tonal range of intaglio or lithography. Pigment binds to [washi](/glossary/washi) rather than sitting on its surface, so layered passages remain breathable and translucent. Maurstig's training at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam grounded her in graphic discipline, while NAPP in 2006 introduced her to the Japanese tradition. The Mokumap series is one place where those two formations meet. The work aligns with a generation of contemporary international mokuhanga practitioners who have moved the medium away from [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) subject matter toward landscape, abstraction, and conceptual document-making.
