Description
This untitled print represents Pittman's continuing work in mokuhanga, completing a sequence of untitled pieces that share the medium and the artist's preference for non-descriptive titling. The accumulation of multiple untitled works in a single artist's catalog is a deliberate framing decision: it positions the prints to be encountered as a related body rather than as discrete narratives, and it draws emphasis to the variations that arise within a sustained engagement with one technique. Mokuhanga's defining technical elements — [washi](/glossary/washi), water-based pigment with nori, [baren](/glossary/baren) burnishing, [kento](/glossary/kento) registration — remain constant across such a series, while differences in block carving, color sequencing, and impression count provide the range of variation. Pittman's 2024 IMC Americas selection situates this body of work within the contemporary international mokuhanga community, a network sustained by the triennial International Mokuhanga Conference and by training programs that have brought practitioners from the Americas, Europe, and Australia into sustained contact with Japanese masters of the technique.
