Description
Continuing through Pittman's untitled series, this print further demonstrates the demands of mokuhanga practice. Registration is among the most exacting aspects of the technique: each block must align precisely with the others through the kentō system — typically an L-shaped corner notch and a straight edge guide — so that successive colors fall into the intended positions without bleeding or visible misalignment. Even slight slippage between blocks becomes legible in the finished print. Water-based pigment, mixed with rice paste (nori) for body, behaves differently than oil-based ink, requiring the artist to dampen the [washi](/glossary/washi) to a specific moisture level before each impression. As one of the contemporary North American artists selected for the 2024 IMC Americas exhibition in Echizen, Pittman's work participates in the ongoing transmission of this craft outside of Japan and into the studios of practitioners across the Americas.
