Description
This untitled print represents another facet of Kay Brown's mokuhanga production following her 2024 MI-LAB Basic Training Program C in Echizen. The Basic Training C programme is structured around accelerated technical instruction, exposing participants to the full sequence of traditional woodblock printmaking: drawing the hanshita-e, transferring it to the cherry block, carving with the hangi-to and aisuki, and printing successive colour blocks in registration. An untitled work from this period likely demonstrates the artist's negotiation with these processes rather than presenting a developed pictorial subject. Brown's parallel inclusion in the IMC Europe exhibition indicates that her residency outputs were considered ready for international juried display, suggesting a degree of technical resolution beyond pure exercise. Within the broader contemporary mokuhanga movement, untitled prints of this kind contribute to an ongoing discourse about whether the medium's traditional sign-systems — meisho-e, kacho-e, bijin-ga — translate or dissolve when practised by artists working outside the historical Japanese context.
