Description
This untitled print extends Kay Brown's engagement with mokuhanga following her 2024 training at MI-LAB in Echizen. The MI-LAB Basic Training C programme typically introduces participants to the full sequence of multi-block colour printing, including the transparent overprinting that gives traditional Japanese prints their characteristic chromatic depth. Untitled prints from such residencies frequently document the artist's developing fluency with this layered process, with each impression contributing both colour and a faint embossing of the block's edges into the paper. Brown's representation of England at the IMC Europe juried exhibition in the same year places this work within a network of contemporary practitioners — concentrated around MI-LAB alumni and the IMC's quadrennial conferences — who are negotiating how a centuries-old Japanese technique adapts to studio practice in Europe. The print's untitled status reinforces a reading focused on material and process rather than on subject.
