Description
His contemporary approach to Japanese printmaking distinguished him from both the traditional shin-hanga artists of the prewar period and the purely abstract printmakers of the postwar avant-garde, finding a middle path that maintained the representational subject matter of the Japanese tradition while employing the bold, graphic language of modern art.
