Red Sphere No. 7 continues Ogawa's systematic investigation of a single circular form in the silkscreen medium. By the seventh iteration in the Red Sphere sequence, Ogawa likely refined the tonal and chromatic relationships he had established in earlier works, adjusting the interplay between the sphere's deep vermillion surface and the ambient ground. The silkscreen process allows for precise control over ink density and layer transparency, and Ogawa uses this to render the sphere with a soft, diffused edge rather than a hard contour—giving it a sense of volume without resorting to conventional shading. The background remains minimal, directing full attention to the orb's color temperature and spatial float. The numbering across the Red Sphere series implies a serial, research-oriented approach common among Japanese printmakers trained in the postwar period, treating each print as a discrete study within a sustained formal inquiry.
Red Sphere No. 7 was created by Koichi Ogawa (小川幸一).
